Redevelopment and restoration of the building "Im Scheffel" ... moreThe"Scheffel"-as the name (in German) already expresses-is a former granary, probably erected by the bishop of Cologne in 1561. The building gained significance during the siege because it protected the basis for the most important food:bread. Our customer bought this house in 1998. According to the result of a construction research the building was gently turned into its original state again. We did this in co-operation with the owner, several numbers of experts, with support from the German Foundation for monuments under order of preservation, the city of Rheinberg and the regional authority for listed buildings. The core of the house was removed. The Technical University of Delft had developed a special process, which allowed us to use the original beams by adding a protective cap and stabilising them. After two years of restoration including a conscientiously designed kitchen and a "staircase tower", a restaurant came into being that offers a fantastic ambience, a modern part of the building contains the kitchen and two large flats in the upper floors. This project is a proof of the combination of a strict realisation following the guidelines for listed buildings and the current economic demands of the gastronomic business located in the building.
